CARTERTON
VITAL STATISTICS FIGURES FOR JULY. (“Times- Age” Special.) There was 9 births, 1 marriage and 8 deaths in Carterton during July. DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Mr H. J. McKenzie presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School last night. There were also present Messrs P. Beere, F. Denbee, G. Stark, W. E. Knowles, G. L. Chatwin, C. K. Goodin and the headmaster, Mr W. Martin. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs H. O. Peters and R. Williams. The treasurer reported a credit balance at the bank of £2B 18s lid. Permission was given the medical unit of the E.P.S. to use the old school building in case of emergency as a casualty clearing station. The headmaster’s report showed that the number of children on the school roll was: Primary, 375; secondary, 50. It was reported that the recent earthquake had enlarged the cracks in the secondary department of the school building, that several panes of glass had been broken and that damage had been done to the science room. It was resolved to write- to the Education Board pointing out that the members of the committee were of the opinion that the building was unsafe. The chairman was congratulated upon his election as a member of the Wellington Education Board. The secretary was. instructed to forward a letter of sympathy to the Pahiaifua District High School Committee in connection with the death of Mr G. Godfrey Taylor. Further Earthquakes. An earthquake was felt in Carterton at 10.10 p.m. last evening, and another at 8.6 o’clock this morning. Boy Scouts’ Bottle Drive. The Boy Scouts had another very successful bottle drive on Saturday, the proceeds from which will be devoted to the Air Scout uniforms fund. Personal Items. At last night’s meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows, a vote of condolence was passed to the widow of Bro Robt. Franks. There was a large attendance at the funeral of the late Mr Hugh Crossle Armstrong yesterday afternoon. A service was held at St Mark’s Church. The many beautiful wreaths received testified to the high esteem in which the late Mr Armstrong was held. The services at the church and graveside were conducted by the Rev W. F. Stent. The pallbearers were Messrs Loftus and Irvine Armstrong (brothers), Geoffrey Armstrong (nephew), A. Desmond, L. J. Fairbrother and E. B. Eagle. S.M. Court. The monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrates’ Court will be held tomorrow. Two persons will be charged with having been found in the vicinity of a dance hall with liquor in their possession. Personal. Mr and Mrs W. A. Hart have received a message from their son William saying that he is fit and well. They have also received information that their other son, Irvine, has been appointed to the rank of major.
