BRAVE AIRMAN
SERGEANT-PILOT GAWITH CITATION TO D.F.M. AWARD. In reference to the D.F.M. awarded to Sergeant Pilot P. M. Gawith, sen of Mr and Mrs A. C. Gawith, Longbush, the official citation states: “He has completed many day and night operations and has taken part in successful intruder operations against the enemy in Germany and German occupied territory. He shows great keenness to engage the enemy and has destroyed two aircraft and damaged two others. By his courage and initiative he sets an excellent example.” Sergeant Pilot Gawith left New Zealand in April, 1941, trained in Canada and arrived in England in September. After training in Spitfires, he joined his brother, Squadron Leader A. A. Gawith, D.F.C., at Hunsdon Station, being posted to No. 3 Squadron (night fighters) under Squadron Leader Aitken of Dunedin. He reported a poor flying but good Rugby winter. The Hunsdon fifteen, for which he played half-back, came through the season unbeaten to win the All England Fighter Command Cup. Since the squadron moved to the south coast, the flying season has improved.
