OBITUARY MRS M. J. SMITH. (“Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred recently in the Buchanan Home, Greytown, of Mrs Mary Jane Smith, formerly of Newman. She was born in Takaka, Nelson, on February 22, 1844, and was the daughter of the late Samuel and Margaret Mercer, who arrived in Nelson in 1843. She married the late Mr Charles Smith in 1870. Mr Smith died in 1900. She leaves a son, Mr Albert Smith, of North Road, Newman, and a daughter, Mrs Durbridge, Auckland. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs Murphy, of Auckland, eight grand and nine great grandchildren. A Heavy Frost. A very heavy frost was experienced in Eketahuna yesterday. Sharp Earthquake. A sharp earthquake was felt here yesterday afternoon. Postmaster Promoted. Mr N. Williams, Postmaster at Eketahuna, has been promoted to a similar position at Papakura, 19 miles south of Auckland. Mr and Mrs Williams have been very popular and will be greatly missed by local residents. Mr Williams, who was formerly on the staff of the Masterton Post Office and later postmaster at Carterton, has carried out his duties in a most efficient, courteous and conscientious manner. Mrs Williams was formerly an outstanding hockey player in Masterton and represented Wairarapa in matches and at.tournaments. She was a member of the Ramblers Club, winners of the Masterton Hockey Cup, and one of the best teams ever the Wairarapa produced. Personal. Mrs Tuohy and Miss Aileen Williams, Pahiatua, spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs N. Williams, Alfredton Road.
