CARTERTON

SILVER BAND GOOD PROGRESS MADE. ("Times-Age” Special.) It is pleasing to note that excellent progress is being made with the Carterton Band which is composed mostly of lads who are very keen to learn under the bandmaster, ’Mr W. Spooner. Two local citizens have donated £1 each for the purpose of encouraging the boys, and after six months the most improved players will receive their reward from these donations. SCOUTS AND CUBS Mr Cooksley, Scout Commissioner for New Zealand, met twenty-seven Scouts and Cubmasters at the Bandroom on Saturday night, and explained the principles of cubbing and scouting. Supper was provided after the meeting, and a vote of thanks was accorded the Band Committee for the use of the hall. ANNUAL MEETING OF SCOUTS Mrs M. E. Mellish (president) presided at the annual meeting of the First Carterton Troop of Boy Scouts held in the Scout Den last evening. There were also present: Mesdames A. Patterson, A. Thompson, A. Adams, Messrs A. Patterson, A. Adams, Fairbrother, H. T .Ray, W. Morris, P. Nilsen, I. Martin, R. N. Barton, Wyeth (Eketahuna), and H. J. Farley (Greytown). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Cooksey (Commissioner for training) and C. J. DeLacey. The Scoutmaster, Mr Fairbrother, reported on matters in connection with the Scout Troop and Cub Pack and the formation of the new Air Scout Troop.

The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr W. G. Morris;" vice-presidents, Messrs D. L. Taverner, J. A. B. Lawrence, G. A. Vincent, N. Marinich, B. Roberts, M.P., P. A. Cole,. J. Callister, C. C. Callender, W. Vaughan, G. Hughan, W. Howard Booth, H. J. Brown, W. Martin, Howard E. Jackson, V. L. Robinson, J. Udy, L. J. Loftus, A. E. Pankhurst, W. Wong, H. Knutson, I. Moody, F. E. Ward and Dr. Wells; secretary, Mr G. Morris; treasurer, Mr- A. Patterson; auditor, Mr C. J. DeLacey; committee, Mesdames Patterson, Mellish, Thompson, Adams, Messrs A. Adams, Patterson, C. 'J. DeLacey, and warranted Scout officers. Mrs Patterson moved a vote of thanks to Mrs Mellish for her help as president during the past year, and to Mr Ray for his help at card tournaments. The motion was seconded by Mrs Thompson and carried. On the motion of Mrs Patterson a vote of thanks was passed to the donors of crockery and to the patrons of the card tournaments during the past year. Mr Fairbrother moved that Mr W. G. Morris be elected as representative to the District Committee. This was seconded by Mrs Mellish and carried. On the motion of Mr Fairbrother, seconded by Mrs Mellish, Mr Patterson was elected deputy chairman. ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE. Totara Lodge No. 3, United Ancient Order of Druids, met last night, Arch. Druid Bro. B. Neilsen presiding. Reference to the death of Bros. JPaaske, and to W. C. Jimmieson was made by the Arch. Druid after which votes of condolence were passed to the relatives. District President Bro. A. J. Dew, on behalf of the lodge, presented P.A. Bro. A. F. Stretton with a P.A. Lodge Jewel in recognition of the services rendered by him. Bro. Stretton suitably acknowledged the gift. The secretary was instructed to arrange for sending Christmas parcels to lodge members on active service. The secretary was directed to convey the congratulations of the lodge to P.D.P. Bro. H. J. McKenzie on his election as a member of the Wellington Education Board. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £l2 Ils 4d were passed for payment. Borough Council. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council will be held tonight. Personal Items. The high esteem in which the late Miss Edith Mary Waterson was held in the district, was shown by the large attendance at her funeral yesterday . afternoon. The services at the house and the graveside were conducted by the Rev. J. A. Daglish. Many beautiful wreaths were sent. The pall-bear-ers were Messrs Roy Knowles, A. Knowles, G. Peters, I. Waterson, L. Peters and E. Hughes. Mr R. Wilson, left Carterton yesterday to reside at Dannevirke. Word has. been received by Messrs L. C. and L. R. Tunnicliffe and the Misses Tunnicliffe, of Dalefield, that their nephew, Mr Arnold Lloyd Tunniclift'e, second son of Mr F. M. and the late Mrs Tunnicliffe, Awanui, North Auckland, had died at the age of 24 years. Mr F. M. Tunnicliffe formerly resided at Dalefield. Mrs R. J. McCann, of Carterton. has received word from the Defence Minister to the effect that her husband, Pte. McCann was missing, and was presumably a prisoner of war.
