DALMATIAN WOUNDED
ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER. CHARGE AGAINST CONSTABLE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WHANGAREI, July 24. A police constable, Herbert Hunter Barratt, appeared on remand at Kaitaia. today charged with the attempted murder of a Dalmatian gumdigger, Mate Soko Ulrich, aged 45, single, at Lake Ohia, on Monday. He was remanded, in custody, to appear at Whangarei on July 28. Ulrich received his wounds late on Monday afternoon some distance from the shack he occupies near the main Kaitaia-Mangonui highway. He was taken to the Mangonui Hospital in a serious condition and immediately after admission an operation was performed. He had two wounds near his left shoulder-blade. An operation was performed and Ulrich has slightly improved. Barratt was arrested after investigations by Inspector Fox and Detec-tive-Sergeant J. B. Finlay. Barratt, a married man, has been stationed at Mangonui for the past four years, but last week received notice of his transfer to Waiuku.
