LARGE FIRES
STARTED IN DUISBERG POWERFUL R.A.F. ATTACK. 4.000L8. BOMBS DROPPED. LONDON. July 22. A strong force of R.A.F. bombers attacked targets in the Ruhr and large fires were left burning at Duisberg, in Western Germany. Duisberg, city and river port of Prussia, stands near the junction of the Rhine and the Ruhr, and is also served by railways and canals. Near the Westphalian coalfields, it has a great variety of industries. This is the fifth time in six days that the R.A.F. has bombed Germany in daylight. Fifty 40001 b. bombs were included in the much larger total number dropped by the R.A.F. on Duisberg last night. The Germans call these monster missiles "block bombs,” because they are capable of demolishing whole blocks of buildings. Pilots expressed themselves as being well satisfied with the results of the raid. Enemy aerodromes in France and the Low Countries were also attacked. Thirteen bombers are missing.
ENEMY ADMISSION MATERIAL DAMAGE DONE IN RUHR. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) RUGBY, July 22. The force which attacked Duisberg consisted of at least 300 heavy and medium R.A.F. bombers. What the crews described as really good fires were seen in the city itself and in the dock area. A Coastal Command plane is missing from an offensive patrol. One enemy bomber was destroyed over England last night. The Berlin radio admits material damage from the R.A.F.’s raid on the Ruhr last night.
