BLACK WEEK
SHIPPING LOSSES TO JULY 12 HIGHEST SINCE THE WAR BEGAN. ANNOUNCEMENT IN UNITED STATES. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) NEW YORK, July 22. The War Shipping Administration announced that shipping losses during the week to July 12 were the highest since the war began and that sinking of United Nations vessels greatly exceeded new construction. It was declared that in order to counteract the effects of enemy action and marine casualties, shipping space in future would be reserved entirely for import and export cargoes essential to the prosecution of the war. It is emphasised, however, that essential military cargoes have not been left on the piers because of a lack of ships. Four more United Nations vessels have been lost, including the first Portuguese ship destroyed in the Atlantic. A submarine shelled the latter vessel in broad daylight, although she was prominently displaying Portuguese colours. Eight survivors have been landed. Two members of the crew are dead and 34 are missing.
