AIRCRAFT ORDERS
QUESTIONS AS TO DESIGN & PRIORITY ASKED IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS. MR CHURCHILL GIVES FACTS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, July 21. Replying in the House of Commons to a question asking through what channels demands were submitted to the Ministry of Aircraft Production for Army Co-operation and Fleet Air Arm planes, the Prime Minister (Mr Churchill) said the War Office placed before the Air Ministry its requirements, and after discussion the most suitable types of aircraft were chosen. Orders for such aircraft were then given by the Air Ministry to the Ministry of Aircraft Production. Thereafter there was direct liaison between the War Office, the Air Ministry and the Ministry of Aircraft Production on matters of design, etc. Approved requirements for the Fleet Air Arm were made direct to the Ministry of Aircraft Production by the Admiralty. In the case of the dive-bombers ordered in June, 1940, Mr Churchill said, an order was placed by the Ministry of Aircraft Production in agreement with the War Office. Replying to a query as to who decided priorities for the manufacture of various types, Mr Churchill said the Minister of Defence and the Defence Committee, advised by the Chiefs of Staff, approved and reviewed aircraft' programmes and the number of aircraft of various types to be manufactured.
