HOCKEY

WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATIONS MEN’S GAMES CANCELLED. ONLY ONE LADIES’ MATCH. Conditions were very unfavourable for hockey at Lansdowne on Saturday. The men’s games were cancelled and two of the senior ladies’ teams defaulted, only one game being played, that being between the Excelsior and Carterton A junior ladies.

RESULTS AT A GLANCE

Senior Ladies. Excelsior won by default from Carterton. Greytown won by default from Kia Ora. College a bye.

Junior Ladies. Excelsior 2 drew with Carterton A 2. College won by default from Carterton B. Sincerity a bye.

JUNIOR LADIES

CARTERTON A v. EXCELSIOR

Carterton A and Excelsior met at Lansdowne on Saturday and this proved a very good and fast game especially under the ground conditions. In fact it was a better exhibition than some of the senior games played this season. Carterton commenced the game with determination and it was not until half way through the first spell that Excelsior settled down, Carterton then being two goals up. For the rest of the spell the home team held the advantage but the good play of the visitors two full backs kept the score down to one goal before the interval. The second spell was very evenly contested, both teams going very close to scoring on several occasions but the defence was good. .The Carterton full backs and Excelsior’s right half and goalie were prominent for good work. There were very few weaknesses in either team and a draw was a good indication of the play. Excelsior scored a goal in this spell and thus equalised the score. Goals were scored by Miss Parker and the inside right for Carterton, and Misses Rutherford and Moor for Excelsior. This game practically decides the junior championship and gives Carterton a one point lead. It does not appear as if next Saturday’s games will make any alteration in the position.
