FARMERS AND THE WAR

CONFERENCE RESOLUTION. 100 PER CENT. BEHIND EFFORT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The Now Zealand Fanners’ Union in annual conference in Wellington yesterday recorded these resolutions: — “This Dominion conference re-affirms its pledges of loyalty to the King, and to the cause of our Empire and our Allies against the ruthless aggressors of humanity and liberty. We pledge the services of our organisation to assist in securing a 100 per cent, war effort from all sections of the community. We call apon our members, most of whom are already labouring strenuously long hours, and short-handed, for a superb effort to maintain or increase, as required for our war effort, the production of meat, butter, cheese, wheat, oats, potatoes, wool and linen flax, all of which are important. “We call upon the Government and others in positions of responsibility to set aside party and personal position and privileges, to shelve party politics, and give a united lead to our people in this time of our greatest danger. This is no time for complacency, and we feel the need for a speeding-up of New Zealand’s war effort, that we might, as we should, in primary and secondary production, and in military and patriotic effort, keep pace with the Allies who have already with great resources and energy, come to our aid.

“This conference places upon record its deep appreciation of the sacrifices made-by the men who are fighting our battles overseas. It pays a tribute to their gallantry, and pledges itself to see that they are not let down through failure on the part of the farmers of this country to back them up in every possible way.”
