Some reports from Moscow state that the Russians have launched a counter-attack directed against the enemy’s left flank on the banks of the Don. Soviet tanks, cavalry and infantry, the “Red Star” says, have forced the Germans to retreat southward. The newspaper adds that the Germans are already constructing field fortifications here for a depth of two miles. Another report says that streams of German reinforcements, including tanks and motorised infantry, are pouring toward the Don from Kursk. The situation on the southern front is regarded in London as very’ grave, but there is no confirmation of a German attack from Taganrog toward Rostov. The Germans themselves claim to have made heavy bombing attacks on Rostov. The Moscow radio (reports the Press Association) says that the Russians at Voronezh are fighting another battle 'of Sebastopol. Counter-attacking with i renewed strength, they are throwing back the panzers and motorised forces at the approaches to the town. After heavy fighting on the Kalinin front, General Zhukov’s forces have driven the Germans from several villages and cut an important highway at several points.
