SOME ENEMY GAINS

GRIM RUSSIAN DEFENCE OF VORONEZH AGAINST SMASHING ATTACK. WITHDRAWAL WEST OF MOSCOW. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 14. Reuter’s special correspondent in Moscow says that German tanks and motorised infantry are now smashing their way into Voronezh (the capture of which the Germans claimed over a week ago). A special announcement from Moscow last night said that the Russians had made a withdrawal to the southwest of Rzhev. It added that since the beginning of July the Germans had lost more than 10,000 men in this sector, while the Russian losses had been about 7000 killed and 5000 missing. Another message states that a large proportion of the 5000 missing are likely to be engaged in guerilla operations behind the enemy front. A Moscow message says that the Russians in counter-attacks have recaptured three places on the Kalinin fronts one of which is tactically important. The fighting near Rzhev, though it is fierce and prolonged, does not yet show signs of exceeding local preparations for a larger future battle against Moscow, says the Stockholm correspondent of “The Times.”
