EARTHQUAKE REPAIRS
ASSISTANCE OF SOLDIERS APPRECIATED. COUNTY CHAIRMAN EXPRESSES THANKS. Referring to the recent earthquake, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee, chairman of the Masterton County Council, speaking at yesterday’s meeting, said that the declaration of a state of emergency had enabled prompt steps to be taken to 'meet the situation.- The position today was that everything appeared to be running smoothly. Mr- Lee made special reference to the excellent demolition work carried out in town and country by soldiers. They were deserving of the best thanks of the community. Since the earthquake, Mr Lee observed, heavy rain had fallen and it looked as if the county was in for a pretty rough time. Mr Lee went on to point out that the Masterton borough and Masterton, Mauriceville and Castlepoint counties were working as one organisation as far as the carrying out of essential earthquake repairs were concerned. The borough was meeting all payments and the county would be called upon to collect the cost of repairs from the residents concerned in the county area. Regarding a resolution passed by the Wairarapa Trades Council, it was stated that preference was given in effecting earthquake repairs, to the most urgent cases.
