BRIDGE APPROACH

SCOURED OUT BY FLOOD WATERS. A FORTUNATE DISCOVERY. The southern approach to the Colombo Road Bridge was scoured out during the night by flood waters from the Waipoua River and left in a particularly dangerous state, only the crust of the road remaining intact. A cyclist rode over the crust at 3.15 o’clock this morning, ' but fortunately it did not give way. Had a car crossed the bridge a different story would have been told. The cyclist reported the matter to the police and steps were taken to close the road. The approach was washed out for the full width of the road, with a cavity 12 feet deep. Repair work was put in hand this morning and good use was made of rubble from buildings damaged in the recent earthquake. It was hoped to restore the road by midday.
