COMMANDER OF AMERICAN AIRCRAFT-CARRIER. LOST IN MIDWAY ISLAND BATTLE. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) WASHINGTON, July 8. The Secretary of the Navy, Colonel Knox, decorated Rear-Admiral Sherman, commander of the aircraft-carrier Lexington, with the Gold Star. Admiral Sherman won the Navy Cross as a submarine commander in the last war. At the same time, the dual decoration of the Navy Cross and the Gold Star was awarded Lieutenant Noel Gayler, an aviator, who served aboard the Lexington. Lieutenant-Commander Thiirlav Davison also received the Navy Cross for action in the Philippines.
