FATE OF HERMIONE

TORPEDOED AT NIGHT 1 AFTER BEATING OFF MANY BOMBING ATTACKS. MEN SWIM TILL RESCUED. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) LONDON, July 7. The story of the sinking of the British cruiser Hermione during a convoy battle in the Mediterranean can now be told, states an Alexandria message. She was torpedoed on the night of June 16 after beating off repeated bombing attacks for 48 hours. A list prevented launching of the boats, and the complement of 600 jumped and slid to the sea and swam and floated in oil-thick water for half an hour, joking and singing till they were picked up.
