LABOUR MOVE FORESTALLED . U.A.P. & COUNTRY PARTIES CO-OPERATING. NATIONAL GOVERNMENT MAY BE PROPOSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The State Labour Party decided on Tuesday to put into effect today its decision to cease supporting the Government, but when the Legislative Assembly met Labour was forestalled by the United Australia Party, which' moved an amendment to the Address-in-Reply, endorsing the Government’s action in appealing against the Commonwealth uniform tax. The debate is proceeding, but Mr Cain, the Labour ( Leader, announced that Labour would content itself with voting against the United Australia Party amendment. If the amendment were carried, he stated, Labour would cross the floor of the House and become the official Opposition.
The strength of parties now is:— Country Party, 24; United Australia Party, 15; Labour, 21; Independents, 5. The U.A.P. amendment is certain to pass. The Premier, later in the session, may seek to form a National Government. If Labour refuses to join, it is probable that a composite Country Party-United Australia Party Government will be formed.
