NAZI ATTACKS
DEFEATED IN ALAMEIN AREA INTENSIVE ATTACKS MADE BY R.A.F. ITALIAN SHIP TORPEDOED IN lONIAN SEA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.15 p.m.) CAIRO, July 2. A joint communique says: “Our forces in the Alamein position on Wednesday repulsed tank and lorried infantry attacks and fighting continued throughout the day, with results not unfavourable to us. Our columns in the southern sector, northwards of the Quattara depression, engaged some enemy forces seventeen miles westwards of our position. '‘Our bombers and fighters on Wednesday, despite sandstorms, concentrated on formations and intensely attacked the enemy in the Alamein area. They also shot up landing grounds near Sidi Barrani. Seven enemy planes were destroyed and many damaged. Our heavy bombers, on an even greater scale, continued to attack enemy units. There was comparatively little enemy air activity last night. Torpedocarriers twice directly hit an Italian merchantman in the lonian Sea.”
