BOTTLENECK BATTLE
FIERCEST OF AFRICAN CAMPAIGN FURY OF CONFLICT IN INTENSE HEAT. ENEMY ENGAGED AT EVERY POINT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright] LONDON, July 2. In a battle wt-.,.i began early yesterday morning near Alamein, 70 miles from Alexandria, and continued through the day and last night, both sides are reported to have thrown in all their available forces. The flat, firm coastal strip there is relatively narrow, and correspondents confirm the impression that this “Battle of the Bottleneck” is the greatest and fiercest of the whole North African campaign. The fighting raged with increasing fury throughout the day—one of the hottest of the summer—and has continued after sunset in what a correspondent describes as fantastic moonlit scene. The enemy forces have not been able to make a single move without being continually engaged. General Auchinleck’s tactics have greatly hampered the enemy’s effort to 'concentrate his forces at certain points.
