GALLANT EFFORTS
MADE BY THE CHINESE IN CHEKIANG TOWN RECAPTURED ATTEMPT TO STEM ENEMY DRIVE. DIRECTED AT AERODROME. LONDON, June 2. The Chinese recaptured a town in East China, 35 miles south-east of Kinhwa. It was retaken yesterday by Chinese regulars, with the support of the local militia. The Chinese are still holding the main Japanese thrust through Chekiang Province, which appears to be aimed at an aerodrome 50 miles from Kinhwa. In North and Central Burma the R.A.F. has made more raids on enemy targets. A petrol store was set on fire and Japanese river craft on the Chindwin River was bombed and machinegunned. All our planes returned.
NEW ENEMY THRUST KWANGTUNG OFFENSIVE. / CHUNGKING, June 1. The Chinese High Command announced that heavy fighting is in progress in Kwangtung Province, in southern China. General Chiang Kai-shek’s forces are reported tonight to be locked in battle with Japanese near Canton, capital of Kwangtung. The Tokio radio declared the Japanese army in South China has begun an offensive in Kwangtung after the arrival of crack Japanese reinforcement units. ALLIED ACTION FROM CHINESE BASES. ADVOCATED BY ATTACHE IN WASHINGTON. WASHINGTON, June 1. Major-General Shihming, the Chinese military attache, speaking on the official U.S. army radio programme, urged the United Nations to strike quickly against Japan from Chinese air bases. Chekiang was now threatened by the Japanese advances, he said. “Such an offensive would force the Japanese to draw their navy and air force back to protect their communications, thereby relieving India and Australia from danger.” ’ '
