WAIRARAPA UNION. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. The Wairarapa Rugby Union’s A and B grade matches were continued on Saturday in showery weather. A GRADE. In an A grade match Wairarapa College 11 points beat Carterton 6 points (penalty goals by Goodin). For College McDonald scored a try. Welch and Hemi potted goals, both being good efforts, the former’s being particularly so. At half time Carterton led by 6 points to nil, but in the second half College opened up play and kept Carterton busily defending most of the time, running out victors by a margin of five points. Welch played a brilliant game at full back, wtiite O’Brien at second fiVe-eighth was conspicuous for clever play. In the forwards- Orr played exceptionally • well. The Carterton forwards were much heavier thah their Opponents and dominated play in the first siiell. Mr W. Spooner was referee. B GRADE. The Red Star B Grade team defeated Carterton at Rugby Park by 9 points to nil. The Red Star forwards played a clashing game and kept their opponents mostly on the defensive. The slippery state of the ball and the wet conditions robbed them of several scores. Tries were scored for tied Star by Roys and James while Corlett kicked a penalty goal. In the Red Star forwards Corlett played an outstanding game and captaiiied the team. The absence of Wyborn (captain) through illness considerably weakened the pack. Cruickshank, R. Thompson, F. Roys. A. Thompson, James, Rogers and Blatchford were also conspicuous for good work. Mr V. YVelch was an excellent referee. Dalefield forfeited to Masterton. In the Wellington senior competition on Saturday the games resulted as follows:— Army 12. Athletic 7; Petone 11, 5; Poneke-Oriental 8, Old Boys 6; Eastbourne 8, Marist 0; Hutt 17, Seatoun 12.
