BISHOP SELWYN
CENTENARY SPECIAL CHURCH SERVICES. Special church services are being held on Sunday in commemoration of the landing in New Zealand 100 years ago of George Augustus Selwyn, first bishop of the Anglican Church in New Zealand. In Masterton special services will be held at St. Matthew’s. At 4 o’clock, a combined Maori and European service will be held, conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon E. J, Rich, assisted by the Rev. H. Taepa, who will. give the address. Representatives of local bodies have accepted invitations to attend the service. Members of the New Zealand Legion of Frontiersmen will attend the morning service at St. Matthew’s on Sunday. The commemoration is of secular as well as religious interest, because Bishop Selwyn has long ranked with William Hobson, Sir George Grey, Edward Gibbon Wakefield and a few others who are rightly regarded as the chief human foundation stones of present-day New Zealand. His strong personality and the example of his great physical courage and mental vigour left an indtlible impression on the young colony’s life and contributed much to the moulding of the national character.
