BOROUGH AFFAIRS MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers, Featherston, on Thursday, May 14. There were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. W. Card), Councillors G. A. Farrier, W. J. Boston C. R. Skipage, B. B. Donald, C. C. Keiiward, R. R. P. Hardy, H. W. Cundy, and T. G. Hardie. An apology for absence was receiv-t ed from Cr. S. P. Batcheler. The statement of accounts was as follows:—District Fund a/c. credit, £7ll 5s lOd; Cemetery a/c., credit, £BO 19s 9d; Domain a/c., credit, £29 9s lid; Mayor’s Relief Fund a/c., credit, £75 14s 9d; Water Supply Loan, 1936, a/c. credit, £47 Ils 3d; Library a/c., credit, £42 4s Id. Miss E. B. Viles wrote asking that the footpath in front of her home be cleaned and metalled. —Left with the Works Committee. W. J. Hodder wrote asking to be allowed to screen pictures on Sunday evenings after church hours.—The request was .refused. .The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote stating that the conditions of tenancy of Anzac Hall had been confirmed by the Board. The Controller of Evacuation, Lower Hutt, wrote asking to be supplied with the number that can be billeted in Featherston in case of emergency. —It was stated that the information had been supplied. The Rev. J. R. Higgs invited the Mayor and Councillors to be present at St. John’s Church service on Sunday, June 6, which is to be known as Civic Sunday—The invitation was accepted. The Health Inspector supplied his report on the general health of the borough for the quarter ending 31/3/42. which was very satisfactory. Two Treasury vouchers were received for water and drainage supplied to the Justice Department and the Railway Department. The Wairarapa Hospital Board supplied a copy of estimates for year 194243, showing the borough quarterly instalment to be £79 10s, against £57 9s Id last year. The amount is to be paid. The Wairarapa District Lighting Controller wrote complimenting the fire wardens on their fine effort during the first trial blackout on April 19. Lt. A. White, of the Home Guard., wrote asking the co-operation of the Council by giving permission to dig slit trenches within the borough. It was resolved that the Reserves Committee meet members of the Home Guard to arrange sites for the digging. The Ranger reported having dealt ■ with five head of cattle during the month. The estimates for the current year were read and accepted and ordered to be advertised. Rates showing an increase of Id in the £ are to be struck at next council meeting. The reason of the increase is due to the recent new valuation of the Borough showing a decrease of unimproved value of over £3,000. ■ Personal. Mrs C. J. Carlyon, Eastbourne. 7 Citizens’ United Service. 1 Attention is drawn to the advertisement in this issue of the Citizens’ War - Time United Service to be held in the 1 Town Hall on Sunday night when the 3 Rev.
