CAPTURE REPORTED BV JAPANESE FOLLOWED BY ENTRY INTO BENGAL. APPROACH TO CHITTAGONG. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 7. The Tokio official radio announced that a military spokesman said the chief objective of the Japanese operations in Burma had been achieved with the entrance to Yunnan and occupation of the airport at Akyab. The “Asahi Shimbun” reported that the Japanese at first planned to attack Akyab from the sea, but decided on a land campaign because of the heavy British coastal defences. The “Asahi” further' reported that Japanese airmen were bombing British and Chinese troops and motor columns north of Mandalay. A London message says the Vichy radio announced that a message from Bangkok stated that Japanese troops from Akyab had proceeded northward, crossed the Indian frontier near Elephant Point, and were now near Chittagong. Chittagong, about 155 miles north of Akyab, is in that part of Bengal which lies east of the Bay of Bengal.
