As a result of the French population’s part in the fighting at St. Nazaire, during the British commando raid, the German authorities at Brest have issued a proclamation threatening a state of siege throughout the region, says the Independent French news agency. A siren will sound three- times to announce that a state of siege has begun, after which civilians must immediately take shelter in the nearest house. Civilians who remain on the streets or show themselves behind closed windows, or carry arms; may be shot on the spot by patrols. From the beginning of the state of siege, civilians are prohibited from using, telephones, telegrams, trains or trams. All shops, hotels, cafes and schools will close. Drastic measures will be taken in the event of hostile demonstrations.
