RETURNED SERVICES

ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION.

(“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Featherston branch of the Wairarapa Returned Services’ Association was held in the Town Hall on Friday night. There were 30 members present. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —President, Mr H. Lawson; hon. secretary, Mr J. A. Halpin; treasurer, Mr H. C. Hunter; delegate, Mr J. W. Fellingham; auditor, Mr H.- Crawford; committee, Messrs C. C. Corlet, C. Bargh, G. H, W. Lowell, J. King, F. S. Hayes, F. Cassidy, G. W. Brandon, K. H. Allen, F. H. Chamberlain and the Rev. J. R. Higgs. The president extended a welcome to Mr F. H. Chamberlain, who was previously a member of the First Echelon.

Appreciation was expressed to Mr F. S. Hayes for his services on the committee over a number of years. The question of holding the usual annual ball was left to the discretion of the committee.

The annual report stated inter alia: --The membership at the end of the year reached 105, an increase of 4 over last year’s total and a record for the branch. We regret to record the passing of one of our members, Mr Stewart, after a long illness. Mr Stewart was a veteran Of the South African and Qreat Wars.» Poppy Day sales again reached record figures, the amounts being £34 Is for 1941 and £36 8s for last month. In expressing our appreciation to Miss Card and her staff for their splendid effort, we would like to include the public for their support of the appeal. The sum of £52 10s was paid to various members in relief during the year. The increase in the sales of poppies resulted in three extra monthly grants being made. Personal. Mrs F. J. Heron, Canterbury, is visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Anderson. Leading Aircraftman John Lawson, has returned to Blenheim, after a brief visit to Featherston. Soldiers’ Dance, Another successful soldiers’ dance was held on Saturday night and was very well attended. The music supplied by Ashton’s Orchestra was much enjoyed, as also were the extras supplied by Misses Grace Fraser and Andrew Higginson. Mr Talbot capably carried out the duties of M.C. The junior patriotic committee supplied the supper. COSY THEATRE “THHE THIEF OF BAGDAD.” The brilliant picture, “The Thief of Bagdad,” will be shown tonight. The chief roles are in the hands of Sabu, Conrad Veidt and June Duprez.
