CARTERTON

WEDDING PEARCE—WATKINS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The marriage took place recently in St Mark’s Church, Carterton, of Eileen Maimie, older daughter of Mr and Mrs Cyril Watkins, Kaiapoi, North Canterbury. to Eric Edward, only son of Mr and Mrs W. H. Pearce, Dalefield. The bride, who was escorted by Mr C. Grey, of Masterton, wore a long cream ankle-length frock of lace and ivory satin. Her veil was of e'mbroidered tulle, with a halo of pearls caught at the sides with orange blossom. She was attended by three bridesmaids—her sister, Miss G. Watkins, and Miss A. Hutchinson, of Kaiapoi, and Miss P. i O’Connell, of Sanson. Mr N. Kennedy was best man and Messrs E. Miller and R. Copp were the groomsmen. Miss Maureen Nash, of Wellington, was the flower girl. Miss Nancy Nash presented the bride with a white satin horseshoe at the church door. After the' ceremony the guests were received at Steven's tearooms, Carterton, by the bride’s grandmother, Mrs S. Phillips, of Kaiapoi, assisted by the bridegroom’s mother, Mrs W. H. Pearce. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics for Carterton for April are as follows:—Births 7, deaths 2, marriages 5. Social Gathering. The Belvedere schoolroom was fillbd last evening when the residents of Belvedere and district entertained: Pte. P. Buick. The time was spent in dancing to music supplied by Mrs Rogers 1 , Mr W. E. Knowles acting as M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won'by Mr W. Sage and,Miss A. Bond and a spot waltz by Mr G. Rayner and Mrs Shields. Mr W. Routhan favoured the audience with two vocal numbers for which he was encored. Mr W. G. Thomas played the accompaniments. At a suitable interval in the proceedings, Mr A. E. Reid made a presentation of a wristlet watch to Pte. Buick, and in doing so wished him good luck. Pte. Buick suitably replied. Chimney Fire. Members of the Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade received a call at about 7.30 o’clock this morning to Mr J. A. Wallace’s residence, Connolly’s- Line,) the cause being a blazing chimney. The fire was soon extinguished by the brigade. Rainfall at Carrington. Mr J. A. Roberts, of Carrington, reports:—The rainfall in March and April was as follows: —March: Total rainfall, 4.67 inches, the heaviest fall being on the 10th, 2.58 inches. There were 12 wet days. April: Total fall, 3.04 inches, the maximum being' 1.74 inches on the Bth. The total number of wet days was 9. REGENT THEATRE “PHILADELPHIA STORY.” Tonight’s excellent programme will be headed by “Philadelphia Story,” a particularly good drama in which Caiy Grant, Katharine Hepburn.and James Stewart have the leading roles.
