OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

. SHELTER TRENCHES (To the Editor.) Sir—ln a recent issue of the “TimesAge” it was reported that the digging of trenches for protection against bombing had been commenced at the Wairarapa College. At a representative meeting called for the purpose of discussing the protection of school and college pupils in the event of an emergency, it was decided that trenches should not be dug until the military authority advised that trenches were considered necessary. It appears that the precautions taken at Wairarapa College have the approval of the Mayor and local member of Parliament. Is the danger considered to be more imminent now, than when the precautionary measures to be adopted were decided upon by a meeting of representatives from all the schools and colleges in Masterton? “PUZZLED.” The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, who is chairman of the E.P.S. organisation in Masterton states that in his opinion trenches are not necessary in Masterton. His opinion, he states, is based on the view of those in the best position to express an opinion. If any person got satisfaction from digging trenches they were quite at liberty to do so. His presence at the College grounds for the digging of trenches there was entirely without prejudice to his own opinion on the matter.
