AMERICAN TROOPS ARRIVE IN NEW CALEDONIA WITH APPROVAL OF FREE FRENCH. ISLAND OF GREAT STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, April 25. A communique by the War Department announced today that American troops have arrived in the island of New Caledonia, the French possession in the southwest Pacific. The troops were sent with the approval of the local Free French authorities, and they will assist in the defence of the island. New Caledonia is of considerable strategic importance, and might be used by an invader as a stepping stone for an invasion not only of Australia but also of New Zealand. It has good harbours and is on the main shipping route of Brisbane, Fiji, the Hawaiis, San Francisco and Vancouver. The island declared for General de Gaulle soon after the fall of France.
