HOME GUARD
COMPULSORY ENROLMENT SHORTLY ANNOUNCEMENT BY MINISTER. TRANSFERS WHERE NECESSARY FROM E.P.S. (Ey Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 24. An order requiring the compulsory enrolment in the Home Guard of men in an age group yet to be finally determined would probably come down next week, said the Minister of National Service (Mr Semple) this morning.
Mr Semple added that, with such an enrolment, a proper classification could be made and men suitable for Homo Guard would be transferred from the E.P.S., while others required for the E.P.S. would be left there. Such a system was the only way to secure an efficient E.P.S. and an efficient Home Guard. There were thousands of men in the E.P.S. who ought to be transferred, and power to do so had now been taken. In some places the E.P.S. was top-heavy and the Home Guard was starved. The power to transfer would even up the position. “What we are doing is organising these people, and they will have to be classified where they can render the best service to protect New Zealand, either in the fighting forces, for the Home Guard is a fighting force, or in the E.P.5.,” commented Mr Semple.
