HELP FOR THE SAINTS
BY A FELLOW CALLED “SAM.” OFFERED BY U.S. MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 23. A civic reception was tendered to Brigadier-General Hurley, American Minister to New Zealand, in the Town Hall tonight. The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, was present, and also made a speech of welcome. Brigadier-General Hurley, who was cheered when he rose to reply, expressed his appreciation of the splendid courtesy and hospitality that had been shown to him throughout New Zealand as representative of his country and President Roosevelt, and his equal appreciation of the present welcome. “I was impressed by the fact that we are speaking on St. George’s Day,” the Minister continued. “St. George is the patron saint of England, and of sailors and soldiers, and he was the man who destroyed the dragon. Today St. George is fighting with another dragon, and I want to offer him some recruits. (Applause). “The dragon that he killed, I understand, was at some place in Libya. He has got to fight another dragon out here, and I offer him St. Andrew, St. David, and St;. Patrick. If all together they can’t do the job, I offer them one fellow who has not been canonised— Sam.” (Laughter and more applause).
