PRICE OF WHEAT

INCREASE ANNOUNCED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 23. The Government has decided to increase the price of wheat grown in the South Island by 2d a bushel, from the present figure of 5s 9d to 5s lid a bushel, f.o.b. March, Tuscan basis. The announcement was made by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr Sullivan, today during a conference with the board of directors of United Wheatgrowers (N.Z.), Ltd., representatives of the Army and the National Service Department, the Dominion Oil Fuel Controller, the Wheat and Flour Controller, and the Secretary of Supply. “I am satisfied,” said Mr Sullivan, interviewed after the meeting, “that every endeavour is being made to overcome all outstanding difficulties associated with the increasing acreage of wheat being sown this year. I am confident that the response from farmers to the appeal for the maximum possible acreage of wheat will be a worthy one. It should be borne in mind that our country’s urgent need is to be self-supporting in wheat supplies.”
