WORK FOR VICTORY

RESOLUTION BY BODY OF WORKERS ADDRESSED BY UNION OFFICIALS. RECOGNITION OF DEBT TO FIGHTING MEN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Messrs Cook (General Secretary) and Wallace (Organiser) of the New Zealand Workers’ Union, addressed a mass meeting of workers employed on a section of urgent defence work last evening, and appealed to the workers to put forward their best effort to have the work completed at the earliest possible moment. Enthusiasm was shown and a resolution, moved by Mr J. Clark and seconded by ■Mr J. Hickes, was carried unanimously pledging those on the work to work to the limit of endurance in order to complete the task. “We fully realise the danger to our liberty and lives and the lives of those nearest and dearest to us if a foreign and ruthless foe were allowed to gain a footing in our country,” the resolution states. “We on the home frontmust not forget our duty and the great debt we owe to our gallant mates who have fallen in battle. We pledge ourselves to honour their memory by working day and night, if necessary, in helping to protect their dear ones left behind, so that their sacrifice shall not be in vain. To all engaged in the Fighting Forces, including the Mercantile Marine, we wish good luck and a safe return to their homes.”

The resolution congratulates the Government on its wonderful war effort and recognises the gigantic task Cabinet Ministers are asked to bear and adds: “We will not add to their burden by becoming. involved in petty disputes.”

The resolution adopts the slogan: “Work for victory, fight for victory and if necessary die for victory and the freedom that has been handed down by our forefathers.”
