WARTIME CIRCUS
NO WILD ANIMALS ON SHOW. For the first time for 65 years no wild animals were seen at Wirth’s Circus, which opened for the Easter season in Sydney. Because of the damger of air raids it was decided it would not be safe to allow them into the city. As the elephants which are always used to haul up the “big top” were not available this year, the tent had to be raised with trucks. The managing director of the circus, Miss Doris Wirth, said: “We have heard that the elephants in London stood up to the air raids excellently and I am sure our troupe, would not be afraid of bombs, as in one of their acts they fire cannons.”-
‘Because many of the men have enlisted there were a large number of women performers. Sons of a number of men who performed with the company before the war are now helping to carry on the show.
