MAURICEVILLE

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE COMPETITION WINNERS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville Women’s Institute was held in the Mauriceville Hall on Tuesday afternoon when Miss R. Mortensen presided over a good attendance. Three new members were welcomed. The president expressed thanks on behalf of the Institute to residents for the good response to an appeal made recently for funds for soldiers’ parcels. The potato competition was won by Mrs Nikolaisen with 14? pounds. The competition for the most useful article made from a sugar bag was won by Mrs Baine, with Mrs J. Osborne second and Mrs G. Nielsen third. The best bloom competition was won by Miss J. Larsen, Miss R. Mortensen being second, and Mrs G. Nielsen third. It was decided that members who did not enter the monthly competitions pay a fine of 3d. The bring-and-buy stall proved most successful. The president thanked those members who had helped to provide afternoon tea for the Home Guard during the weekend. Competitions held during the afternoon were won by Miss R. Mortensen and Mrs Pain. The hostesses were Mesdames Rhodes and Pain. SUCCESSFUL DANCE BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION. The Mauriceville District Women’s Institute held a most successful dance on Saturday night in the Mauriceville West Memorial Hall to celebrate its seventh birthday. Visitors were present from all the surrounding districts. The music was supplied by Mrs Madson, Misses I. Madson and R. Mortensen (piano), Messrs S. Forsberg and E. Cameron (bagpipes), and Messrs J. Jansen and A. Madson (accordion). Mr H. C. Mortensen efficiently carried out' the duties of M.C. Mrs R. Miller rendered much appreciated elocutionary items. During the evening the president, Miss R. Mortensen, conveyed thanks to all who had helped, to make the gathering such a success, and stated that the Soldiers’ Parcel Fund would benefit considerably as a result. She then presented Mr and Mrs W. H. Bird with 'a buttonhole and posy respectively and thanked them for donating the supper. Mr Bird suitably replied.
