MEETING IN MASTERTON. DRINKING AMONG WOMEN. At the ordinary meeting of the Masterton branch of the Women's Christian Temperance- Union Miss Tankersley presided over a fair attendance of members. Mrs Jansen led the devotions. A temperance fact was read from the British “White Ribbon,” as quoted by the Rt Hon Isaac Foot in July, 1941: — “What is in the heart of the sober man is on the tongue of the drunkard. Enemy agents know full well that to find the secret of a man's mind one had only to loosen his tongue with alcohol, which always began by chloroforming the centre of the mind and breaking down the safeguards.” A variety of leaflets containing Temperance facts were supplied to members for distribution. Several cuttings from the Press were submitted to the meeting dealing with drinking in New Zealand. It was pointed out that particularly deplorable was the fact that women were found to be .addicted to it as the vogue or fashion of the day. Mrs Jamieson received the thanks of the meeting for her hospitality as hostess. A resolution was passed bearing on religious teaching in schools and is to be forwarded to the Minister of Education.
