The Assistant Secretary of State (Mr Sumner Welles) at a Press conference, was asked about growing nervousness in Lisbon and statements from travellers recently returned from that place that the Portuguese fear an invasion by Hitler in the spring. Mr Welles stated that he had no information, but that any European country not already battling against the Axis invaders was quite justified in worrying about what might happen in the next few weeks.
