SHORTAGE OF TIRES

INSTITUTION OF STRICT CONTROL ANNOUNCED BY SUPPLY MINISTER. I ' APPLICATIONS FOR PERMITS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The Government is taking necessary steps to supplement tire stocks, with a view to keeping essential transport on the road, but it is obvious that more rigid economy in the use of tires must be enforced in order to protect our existing stocks. Stating this, the Minister of Supply (Mr Sullivan) added that in Great Britain, the United States, Canada and Australia, drastic limitations Jiad been placed on the manufacture and sale of all rubber products, including tires. These countries had either prohibited or seriously curtailed exports to every country, including New Zealand and any export releases were made on the strict understanding that the goods would be used only for absolutely essential purposes. A complete reappraisal of existing stocks and of future needs is now being made, in consultation with New Zealand Tire Importers’ Association. In the meantime, the approving officers of the Transport Department have been instructed to discontinue the issuing of permits for new tires or retreaded tires and also permits for the retreading of tires, excepting in cases of extreme emergency. In such instances, applications for permits should be made to the approving officers of the Department in the various districts, Mr Sullivan concluded.
