Read-Admiral Simons, Commandant of the Fifth Naval District, speaking at a new blimp base at Elizabeth City, North Carolina, said: “Submarine activity on the Atlantic seaboard is our worst menace and is hitting very vital spots, but the Axis has paid a terrible price, both in submarines and men.,” Admiral Simons predicted that the new dirigible airships operating from the new base would greatly lessen the number of sinkings.
