“SHAME ON YOUR HEADS”
EXTENSION OF CONSCRIPTION. REJECTED IN ISLE OF MAN. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, April 1. When the Tynwald Court, the Parliamentary body of the Isle of Man, for the second time turned down fur-r ther conscription for the island, Earl Granville, the Governor, said, “May the shame be on your heads!” The Court rejected a proposal for conscripting women aged between 20 and 30 and extending conscription to men between 41 and 50. It accepted a proposal that Manxmen be liable to conscription for civil defence, the Home Guard and agriculture, and women for service within the island, but the Governor refused to sponsor a “milk-and-water, ersatz form of conscription.” The Governor said the Imperial Government did not want the Isle of Man to become a dodging-ground for English, and he hinted that if conscription were not passed measures would be taken to prevent dodgers from visiting the island.
