STILL CHAMPION
LOUIS RETAINS BOXING TITLE. HARD FIGHT AGAINST PLUCKY OPPONENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, March 28. Joe Louis successfully defended the heavyweight championship for the twenty-first time, knocking out the game “Giant” Simon in the sixth round, but only after hitting the challenger with everything he had. Even after being counted out, Simon rose to his feet attempting to continue the fight. t Simon was knocked down twice previously during the fight, being saved each time by the bell, but coming out of his corner for the next round, rushing and crowding the champion and forcing the latter to extend himself to the limit. Louis hit Simon many times on the head with blows which seemingly would have floored an elephant, but the challenger amazed 19,000 roaring fans at Madison Square Garden, fighting courageously on. Louis finished Simon at the opening of the sixth round with a left hook and a tremendous right cross, but Simon was climbing to his feet when counted out. The fight netted 50,000 dollars for the army emergency relief fund.
