BOWLING GAMES ON SATURDAY. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the competitions held by the Carterton Bowling Club on Saturday, the afternoon tea was supervised by Mesdames Billington and Hawker, to whom a hearty vote of thanks was accorded. Mr Aitken, a bowler from Auckland, was accorded a welcome. The following games were played: Masson Cup: A. Thompson, R. Thompson, F. Harrington, G. Riggs (s) holders, beat Kilmister, Colson, McCarty, Newbould (s), 24/6. Smith, Underhill, Barber, G. Hart (s) beat Billington, Hughan, De Lacey, Harris (s), 23/19. Aitken, Stent, Martin (s) beat Beaven, W. Hart, Whyte (s), 24/14. Foss, Bain, Tucker, Harp (s) beat Pankhurst, Clarke, Barr, Simmonds (s), 32/16. SWIMMING PRIMARY SCHOOL EVENTS. On Saturday afternoon the primary school boys’ contests for the A. A. Wilson Cup were decided at the Carterton municipal swimming baths. The results were: — 50yds race: Bond 1, N. Desmond 2. 75yds race: N. Desmond 1. Desmond won a previous contest and thus retains the cup.
FOOTBALL CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING. Tonight at 8 o’clock in the Carterton Fire Brigade Hall the annual meeting of the Carterton Football Club will be held. In view of the fact that many members of the club are in camp or serving with the forces overseas, it is hoped the older members will attend and continue the club’s activities. — National Day of Prayer. There were large congregations at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church yesterday, when the Rev W. J. Couling preached appropriate sermons. The services at the other churches were also well attended. 4 Personal Items. Mr Aitken, of Auckland, was a visitor to Carterton on Saturday and was' the guest of his sister, Mrs W. McPherson. The death occurred at Dunedin last week of Mrs J. Guthrie (nee Miss Effie Reed). Deceased was well-known in Carterton where she resided for many years with her parents, the late Mr and Mrs J. Reid. Mr Percy Reed, of South Carterton, is a brother and to him the sympathy of a large circle of friends will be extended. Pte Bruce Challis, of the Waiouru Military Camp, is an inmate of Taihape Hospital, where he underwent a successful operation for appendicitis. His condition is satisfactory. Mrs L. Johnson, of Victoria Street, Carterton, has received a cable message from her husband who is on active service overseas, saying that he is fit and well. Dance at State Theatre. The dance held in the State Theatre on Saturday night for the purpose of entertaining soldiers was well attended and a most enjoyable time -was spent. The music was provided by Tom Udy’s orchestra, and the M’s.C. were Messrs K. Reid and P. Beere. Bonds for Bombers. A further amount of £227 was received at the Carterton Post Office on Saturday last. This brings the Carterton effort to over £5OOO. REGENT THEATRE "BACK STREET’’ TONIGHT. Telling a most delightful love story, ‘‘Eack Street,” featuring Charles Boyer and Margaret Sullavan, will be shown tonight. 4
