MAHUNGA CLUB SEASON OPENED,ON SATURDAY. OVER HUNDRED PLAYERS ATTEND. Conditions were ideal for the opening o£ the season by the Mahunga Golf Club on Saturday and considerably over 100 players were out on the links. Mr J, G. McFarlane, the club’s secretary, in extending a welcome to the club’s President, Mr G. H. Perry, to Mr Robertson, M.P., and to new members and to the visitors, stated that the season would make a particular call on those members left to take an active interest in the game. Generally all clubs were down in membership and all that could be asked for during the ensuing season was the opportunity to play a game of golf. Every individual was called upon to do a job of work throughout the duration. To those who would be able to join in the game he was of opinion that their chief concern was to maintain the links in good order and sacrifice'their regular game if necessary, so that when members with the fighting forces returned they would find the Mahunga Golf Club still going strong and in order to provide the best of conditions for play. During the recess a small but enthusiastic number of players had formed themselves into a working bee and the conditions under which members played during the afternoon were due to their efforts. He hoped that the play had been enjoyable and that members would have a successful season. He asked Mr G. H. Perry to formally declare the season open. Mr Perry expressed his pleasure at being present. He had been over the course and he congratulated the club on the wonderful improvements carried out. He was glad to know members were so keen on their club and he felt assured that the spirit shown would carry them all through the present crisis. He would like to congratulate the ladies on the excellent afternoon tea which they had provided. In declaring the season open he trusted members would enjoy their game and continue their efforts in the improvement of their links. Mr J. Robertson, M.P., stated that he was’, glad to be present with them all. He also congratulated the club on the improvements carried out on the course. Every season the fairways were being made better for play. The secretary had mentioned the fall in membership owing to war conditions, and the activities of the Home Guard, but that was a position to be proud of and an incentive, as the secretary had stated, for remaining members to carry on and maintain the club for the members carrying out a national job. He hoped that all would enjoy a good season’s play. During the afternoon a mixed fourball was played over 9 holes, the competition being won by Miss V. Corlet and L. A. C. Stokes with Miss Caldwell and Wm. Taylor, runners up. A' novel prize of two sets of cardigan buttons donated by Mrs F. C. Brockett and depicting the actions of a “dud” golfer were awarded to Mr and Mrs D. A. Hunn.
