Moscow reports that in the first operation of any importance in which they have engaged for some time—an effort to break through to certain river positions in the Staraya Russa area—the Germans lost 2,400 men killed, 25 tanks, and 22 planes and were thrown back on the defensive. A correspondent states that the Russians have recaptured another ten villages in the Kharkov area. In one of these actions the attackers surprised a group of German officers and men still at breakfast. SUPPLIES FROM BRITAIN MR EDEN GIVES FACTS. DELIVERIES SHOW RAPID INCREASE. LONDON, March 29. Speaking in South Wales, the British Foreign Secretary. Mr Anthony Eden, gave some details of British aid to Russia. He stated that the Persian supply route was developing ahead of schedule. Deliveries of war materials to Russia in January doubled those of November, and it was hoped by May to double the January figures. During the winter British seamen had continued their voyages to Russia by the Arctic route and had delivered the goods. This was a truly great achievement. Mr Eden said- that when he was in Russia at Christmas time he saw for himself that British tanks, aircraft and other munitions had reached the front and was told of the value the Russians 'attached to them.
