WEST SCHOOL
A HAPPY GATHERING PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS DANCE. LIST OF PRIZE WINNERS. The Masterton West School was the scene of bright and happy gatherings on Saturday afternoon and evening when a plain and fancy dress dance and party was held under the auspices of' the Home and School Association. The junior children attended in the afternoon and seniors and old pupils at night. Parents and ex-pupils were welcomed at both gatherings by Mr J. Farrell (headmaster of the school) and Mr V. Burridge (chairman of the Home and School Association). Many beautiful and original costumes were worn and the judges had a difficult task in making their awards. In the afternoon children were given rides on a donkey, this being one of many attractions at the gathering. The judges of the junior costumes were Miss Cameron and Mrs Stubbings, who made the following awards: —Girls, best costume, Jill Cohen (“Bo Peep’’); most original,. Jocelyn Hart (“Hula"); cheapest, Mary Willett (“Red Cross’’ Nurse). Boys, best costume, Alistair Dugdale (“Indian Prince’’); most original, Ron Taylor (“Bonds for Bombers”); cheapest, Malcolm Yates; special prize (presented by Miss Cameron), Alan Graham (“Soldier”).
The judges of the senior children’s costumes, Mrs J. Robertson and Miss Merle Dickson, made the following awards:—Girls, best costume, Yvonne Burridge (“Crinoline”), and Barbara Ryder (“Gipsy”); cheapest, Nancy Day (“Marigold”). Boys, best costume, Erland Wright (“18th Century Courtier”); most original, Graham Oliver (“Sacked”); cheapest, Maurice McArley (“Swagger”). In the afternoon the music was supplied by Misses Barber and Douglas, l and in the evening by Messrs Arnold Barnes and S. Taylor, Mr H. Filet playing extras. Mesdames Scharnwcber and Stidclph made shoulder sprays which were presented to the judges and to Mesdames J. Farrell and E. R. Rogers and the lady pianists, for which they were thanked by the committee of the association. The thanks of the association were also extended to Miss Cameron for tne special prize presented. Mr V. Burridge, in addressing the parents present, urged upon them the necessity of becoming members of the Home and School Association in older that the greatest, possible assistance could be given in furthering the piogress of the school. Membership, he said, was only one shilling which could be paid to any of the teachers. Mi’ E. R. Rogers (chairman) and a good representation of the school committee were present. A meeting of the Home and School Association Committee will be held on Tuesday night at which a balance sheet and statement in connection with the gathering will be presented.
