GREYTOWN

BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council was held on Monday evening there being present: The Mayor( Mr A. W. Horton), Councillors Blissett, Eagar, Farley, McKenna, Stuart, Tate and Wood. J. A. Brooker forwarded a letter signed by himself and three other occupiers of State houses asking the council to lay out the street fronting their houses. They agreed to keep the same in good order. The Works Committee was authorised to attend to the request. The Deputy Valuer General forwarded the new valuation roll. In reply to Councillor Tate, the Town Clerk said that the total borough valuation showed a very small increase. In some individual valuations there was a large increase. Greytown Pictures Ltd. wrote in regard to the lease of the Town Hall, asking if the building was covered for war risk and if the proceeds of any such insurance would be used for the reinstatement of the building. The company desired to know if the clause in the lease providing for distermination in the event of the fire, earthquake or other accident could be extended to include action by the King’s enemies. Acting on legal advice the Town Clerk was instructed to reply that the building was covered by a war damage risk, but that the council could not agree to any of the other suggestions made by the company. The Health Officer reported three cases of scarlet fever in the borough. • Mr H. W. Jordan was appointed dog tax collector. BOWLING In the Greytown Bowling Club’s singles championship, W. Kilgour beat J. Kiernan and G. Duff beat H. McPhee. Playing for the Centre fours, Harris, Barber, Hart, Sorensen of Carterton, met Brunton, Dennes, McLeod, Higgison. Owing to the failing light play was stopped at the 16th head with Carterton having a lead of 4.

Personal Items. Miss Duff is at present spending a holiday in Palmerston North. Private W. Allen is on seven days’ furlough and is spending a few days in Wellington. Cyclist Injured. A school girl, Beryl Morgan, had a narrow escape yesterday afternoon. When riding a bicycle she collided with an army truck at the corner of Wood and Main streets. Fortunately the lorry was moving slowly . The bicycle was badly damaged but she escaped with skin abasions and slight shock. TOWN HALL DOUBLE PROGRAMME. Tonight the double programme will be headed by “One Night in the Tropics” (featuring Nancy Kelly and Allan Jones) and “The Durango Kid” (starring Charles Starrett), both being high class pictures.
