EMERGENCY WARD
PROPOSAL FOR MASTERTON HOSPITAL. Further consideration of a proposal to erect an additional emergency ward at the Masterton Hospital was given at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board, when details about specifications, site, etc., came before the board. In selecting the site consideration was given to saving costs in respect to heating and drainage. Mrs S. Fletcher suggested an addition should be made to Ward 5 and Panama House to be used as a maternity hospital. Mr Norman Lee, managing-secre-tary: “It would cost a lot of money to make Panama House into a maternity hospital.” The chairman, Mr H. H. Mawley, said the cost of the proposed new ward would be met out of the War Expenses Fund, but if the board started to alter Panama House it would have to raise a loan. A lot of alterations would be required to that building. It was stated that the new ward would cost much more than was originally estimated. The board agreed to the suggestions of the Departments of Health and Public Works and decided to forward an estimate of the price, with detailed specifications to Wellington as soon as these were obtained by the architect.
