U-BOAT WAR
ON LATIN-AMERICAN SHIPPING INVESTIGATION ORDERED IN CHILE. DEMAND FOR SEVERANCE OF RELATIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.20 a.m.) SANTIAGO, March 17. The Chilean Cabinet has ordered an immediate investigation into the torpedoing of the Toltec, which is the first Chilean ship sunk by Axis U-boats. The Foreign Minister (Senor Rossetti) tonight summoned the German, Japanese and Italian envoys to his office. Deputy Bernardo Ibanez, president of the Chilean Workers’ Association, announced that he had requested the Government immediately to sever relations with the Axis, following on the sinking of the Toltec.
ANGER IN BRAZIL DEMONSTRATIONS IN SAO PAULA. (Received This Day. 11.20 a.m.) RIO DE JANEIRO, March 17. Brazilians in Sao Paulo have renewed anti-Axis demonstrations. Large crowds tore down German, Italian and Japanese street signs and substituted the names of recently sunk Brazilian ships. URUGUAYAN VESSEL TORPEDOED & SUNK OFF HAITI. EIGHTEEN MEMBERS OF CREW MISSING. (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) MONTEVIDEO, March 17. The 5,800-ton Uruguayan merchantman Montevideo was torpedoed and sunk off Haiti. Of those on board, 18 are missing and 32 were saved.
