OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

TRANSPORT OF SHEEP (To the Editor.) Sir,—l understood all store sheep were to be driven to save benzine. “Pioneer Buyer” is in the wrong when he considers wealthy farmers have control of benzine. I think it is the Transport Company. I bought 360 ewes at the last fair. The Transport Company schedule charge to take them 20 miles was £l3. Not being a wealthy farmer, I drove them myself —two easy days. The Transport Company has plenty of benzine. My neighbour could not get two extra gallons of benzine to finish pressing his hay. He was told to stack it.—l am, etc.. SHEEP FARMER. Longbush, March 10. Referring to points raised in the above letter, Mr L. M. Archer, manag-ing-director of Wairarapa Transport Ltd. stated that the company had had two drastic cuts in its petrol allocation, one of 25 per cent last winter and another later of 33 1-3 per cent. It was only by careful attention to twoway loading that the company was able to carry on under its present quota. The instructions issued by the Transport Department, Wellington, regarding the carriage of store sheep were being followed by the company. Owing to the difficulty in obtaining tires the company was ijprced to limit the loading of its lorries to 80 ewes and the quotation of £l3 was one for five lorries. The cost of a lorry per mile, one way, was 2s 7jd.
