INVASION FLEET
HEADED FOR PORT MORESBY AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE HAMMER-BLOWS. ATTEMPT TO SMASH ENEMY POSITIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 12'.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. American radio stations broadcast reports that a Japanese invasion fleet has been sighted headed for Port Moresby. “With the real beginning of the hammer-blow offensive of the R.A.A.F. against Japanese-occupied areas, the curtain has been lifted on the war for air and land mastery in New Guinea and Papua,” states the “Sydney Morning Herald's" war correspondent in New Guinea. “The dispersal of enemy forces over the occupied areas of New Guinea, the Huon Gulf and the new landing at Finschhafen all point to a desperate attempt by the Japanese to Consolidate their grip before Australia is ready to launch a heavy counteroffensive. The R.A.A.F. is making devastating attacks in an attempt to smash the Japanese positions before the landing can be consolidated."
